Job Purpose

The College of Engineering is conducting a national search for the Director of the Center for Manufacturing Research (CMR). The candidate sought will provide long-term vision, leadership, and focus for the Center’s research mission as well as administrative management of the staff and Center budget. The Director is expected to expand CMR’s external funding base in core manufacturing areas, partnerships with industry, and enhance its reputation for scholarly excellence and technological innovation in the nationally important area of manufacturing.

The CMR (, established in 1984, is funded by the State of Tennessee “to advance and support scientific and engineering knowledge in areas related to manufacturing.” The Center has historically supported a broad scope of research in support of manufacturing at Tennessee Tech University.

The College of Engineering has the largest enrollment and research expenditure at Tennessee Tech and the second largest undergraduate engineering enrollment in the state of Tennessee. Tennessee Tech is recognized as a doctoral university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and is nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report, ranking 125 in top public schools for 2017. U.S. News also ranked the engineering program as one of the best undergraduate engineering programs.

The selected individual will report to the Associate Dean of Engineering for Research and Innovation. Applicants must demonstrate a track record in manufacturing research which can be either academic and/or industrial. Qualified candidates may be considered for positions with faculty rank.

Essential Functions

Provide dynamic visionary leadership to strengthen the research programs in the College of Engineering strategic research areas related to CMR mission. Assist faculty members in developing externally-funded research projects and industry sponsorship. Establish partnership with relevant research organizations, universities and government agencies. Perform administrative duties related to the Center’s research and development projects and manage the budget. Work cooperatively with other centers, departments and office of research and maintain an active research profile with externally generated funds.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in engineering, manufacturing or a related area. Five (5) years’ experience with a proven track record of externally-funded research in manufacturing related areas. Recognized scholarly achievements as measured by peer reviewed publications.

Preferred Qualifications

Proven ability to assemble successful research teams and commitment to working collaboratively with people from different disciplines. Success in securing and managing competitively obtained research funds. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators of the university and external constituents. Relevant experience in research supervision. Participation and leadership in professional societies.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Salary will be commensurate with education and experience and can be augmented by performance-based arrangements based on indirect cost recovery. Administrative Pay Grade 53.
Benefits Information

Benefits include the accumulation of two vacation days per month and one sick leave day per month, and thirteen University holidays. Other benefits include medical and life insurance (shared cost with the university), retirement, optional 401k, and educational benefits.
