Job Purpose

Teach undergraduate classes, conduct rigorous research in poultry science and disseminate the results to clientele.

Essential Functions

Work as a member of the faculty in School of Agriculture in the area of poultry science with an appointment consisting of 50% research, 20% teaching, and 30% outreach & service. Collaborate with other faculty. Participate in graduate education through advising graduate students, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis research may be included. Teach undergraduate classes in poultry science. Procure grants, contracts, and other funding to support scholarly research and poultry education. Conduct rigorous research in poultry science that is supported by grants, related to live production, biosecurity, food safety, animal nutrition, etc. Provide leadership and strategic planning to establish statewide poultry outreach. Prepare publications and scholarly works, including peer reviewed journals, popular articles, bulletins, and scientific articles for informational and educational purposes. Build collaborative relationships with Tennessee poultry industry, University of Tennessee Cooperative Extension, Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Tennessee Farm Bureau, USDA, and other agencies and organizations to multiply effectiveness and avoid duplications of programs. Travel to provide support to poultry programs in counties, and participate in the collaborative work with Tennessee Poultry Association and other organizations. Attend state, regional and national poultry meetings and conferences. Evaluate and document expected results and impacts of educational programs on targeted audiences. Mentor students for competitive career placement within the industry. Develop and implement a grower education program to enhance cost share opportunities for growers, with various state and federal agencies and programs. Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies. Provide assistance with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Poultry Science or closely related field. Knowledge about how to conduct audience needs identification, program development, experiential learning and evaluation of program results. Demonstrated skills in working with people and the ability to develop partnerships and collaborations. Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences, commitment to include diverse voices in program prioritization and planning, and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming. Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to communicate and work with faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Demonstrated ability to facilitate experiential learning. Demonstrated ability to provide effective academic and career advising. Two or more years professional experience in poultry science.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Commensurate with education and experience. Full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position to begin January 1, 2018.
Benefits Information

Benefits include the accumulation of two (2) vacation days per month and one (1) sick leave day per month, and thirteen (13) University holidays. Other benefits include medical and life insurance (shared cost with the university), retirement, optional 401k, and educational benefits.
