Job Purpose

Teach courses in the BFA fibers curriculum, advise majors in fibers concentration, and fulfill service mission for the School of Art, Craft & Design.

Essential Functions

Teach courses at beginning through advanced levels in the BFA fibers curriculum. Advise majors in fibers concentration. Lead development of the fibers curriculum and recruitment of fibers students. Educate students in a variety of fibers processes including traditional, contemporary and digitally oriented studio practices in both textile construction and surface design. Responsible for safety and operations in the fibers studio. Oversee maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment. Supervise artist in residence. Oversee supply and equipment budget; keep inventory and order studio supplies. Support SAC&D development efforts. Participate in providing and engaging visiting artists that are on campus. Plan exhibitions and workshops. Perform service assignments at the departmental and university level. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MFA from an accredited institution with a portfolio displaying strong technical knowledge and teaching in fibers. Two years (4 semesters) prior university or college level teaching experience. Broad knowledge of fibers history and contemporary trends including studio practices of functional and sculptural fibers and the range of contemporary practices. Professional competence in a range of studio skills in fibers, including both textile construction and surface techniques. Broad competence in traditional and contemporary methods such as weaving, printing, dyeing, felting, knitting, spinning, etc. Significant regional and/or national exhibition record. Demonstrated commitment to preparing students for a professional studio career.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional full-time teaching experience in fibers at the university or college level. Strong national exhibition record. Studio and teaching experience in a variety of fibers methods and interdisciplinary mediums. Experience with software and digital technologies appropriate to design, production and promotion in fibers. Experience and commitment to support the development of the entrepreneurial outlook and skills of BFA students. Established connections with professional and artistic organizations and communities supporting fibers, and the ability to mentor students’ professional development.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Commensurate with education and experience. Full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position to begin August 1, 2018.
Benefits Information

Benefits include the accumulation of one sick leave day per month and thirteen University holidays. Other benefits include medical and life insurance (shared cost with the university), retirement, optional 401k, and educational benefits. Deferred income and benefits over 12 months.
